This were the categories that we used to rank the cafes ...

 

Price

 

Price would be considered as one of the most important factors that will determine whether a cafe is good or bad for customers. In other words, if a cup of coffee is too expensive, there may be a chance for the cafe be too much of a financial burden to customers. Hence, Americano tends to be the basis for all drinks in cafes. In other words, if the Americano tends to be cheaper, we figured out that there was also the possibility that other products were also less expensive compared to other stores to match the price of their Americano. Therefore, we collected the price of regular Americano for each brand to compare price.

Advertisement 

 

Advertisement can reflect how approachable each cafes are to customers and how much they invest to make their brand more appealing. If the cafe brand contained either a regular advertisement, managed a website, and contained a smart phone application we gave a point. If the brand contained a special type of advertisement for instance included a celebrity figure which needs more investment we gave 2 points.

Waiting Time

 

Imagine having to wait for 30 minutes for a cup of coffee, it would be a NIGHTMARE !!! The more a customer has to wait for their order, the more uncomfortable as dislike they would feel towards the cafe. Hence, the shorter time the better !! For this category, we went to each cafe brands, ordered a Americano (again, it is the basics of all products) and timed how long it took for our order to be served. Again, although the drinks were ordered from cafes that are located in Seoul and Bundang, it would be approximately the same for any other locations for the fact that each brands have a particular recipe or process that is followed in every location.

Comfort

 

As mentioned in the introduction, most people go to cafes to seek for a place to sit, chat with friends, study, or to have some relaxing time of their own. Hence, this makes comfort to be extremely important. To rate comfort for each brand we gave a point for whether each cafe provided free internet service (important to those who are on their laptops and others). Also, we also conducted a survey of 8 people each from two locations (Seoul and Bundang) for each cafe and asked them to rate their comfort from the scale of 1 - 10.

Availability 

 

Availability is important because, it would reflect in how approachable each brands are to their customers. For this categories, we counted how many stores each brand had in Korea.

Menu

 

Although for price we only considered the price for regular Americano, we also felt that we should also value other drinks and desserts in each cafes. Hence, through this category, we counted the number of products each brands contained to see how much of a variety of drinks and desserts each served.

Taste

 

Taste is definitely something that can’t be missed when one is ranking products that can be eaten or can drink. This category may be more subjective compared to others for the fact that we surveyed 8 people each from two different locations -Bundang and Seoul- for each brand (16 people in total). Again, we only chose those who ordered a cup of Americano to eliminate bias that involves the type of drink or dessert one has ordered and asked each to rate their drink in the scale of 1 - 10.

Eco-Friendly

 

The categories that are listed above are mainly categories that benefits the individual. However to make a cafe to be extra special, we believed that we should also take account on how much each brands contributes to our community. A specific contribution would be whether each brand tries to advocate environmental related campaigns. For this category, we counted how many events or campaigns each had to promote eco-friendly products and actions over the past 6 month. Also for each events we rewarded the brands with a point each.
