Everywhere we go, every corner we turn, we see signs inviting us to sit, rest, and have a cup of coffee. In other words, cafes are everywhere here in Korea. However, which one is the best?



To satisfy our curiosity, we decided to conduct research to figure out which cafe people believe is the “best.”

Unfortunately, due to certain limitations that prevented us from having enough time and data to cover the entire population or rate all cafes in Korea, we had to create boundaries to make this research possible. First of all, we chose to rate 15 specific cafe brands. The brands were:

The reasons behind this decision were first of all, the brands listed above are well known chains and cafe brands that can be easily located in Korea.In other words, every city we go we will be able to find at least one of each in South Korea. This is important because, small private cafes may also qualify as good cafes however the evidence to support this would be limited because of the smaller pool of customers for that specific cafe. We wanted to find cafes that had nationwide as opposed to regional or local appeal. On the other hand, large cafe brands would have more of a variety of customers from different locations which would help us to collect general data from a larger pool. Another crucial reasoning behind our decision is the fact that large cafe brands tend to be uniform. In other words, even though one is located in one city and another in a different city, as long as it is the same brand it will contain identical interior styles, identical recipes for desserts and drinks and pretty much identical everything down the jazz CDs they play. Potential Flaws

We rated the taste of drinks in each cafe by surveying people who were in the cafe. This might have introduced response bias because people who were in the cafe would be there because they like the drinks, so the rating would be generally high.

The waiting time was calculated by averaging the waiting time of drinks in cafes in Bundang and Seoul. There might be a flaw in this calculation because the waiting time in the same cafe could differ every time due to the amount of customers. Therefore, the generalization might not have been accurate.

Another flaw would be the rating of comfort level because we also surveyed people in the cafe to rate the comfort level, and it might have been biased because people would choose seats that are comfortable for them. Therefore, the ratings would not be low in general.

Our ranking system might have been flawed in general because of the way we weighed each category. We valued the categories of price and taste as the most important features. However, if we had valued other categories more and gave them more importance, the rankings would have been different.
